About

Mike in his shop

Mike Beers began his career as a graphic artist  and sign maker 25 years ago.

An accomplished fine woodworker, designer and extreme fabricator, he got his start as an itinerant sign maker and crafts show exhibitor. Over the years he has acquired an amazing variety of fabrication skills and has designed, built and installed projects ranging from contained wetland habitats for the National Aquarium in Baltimore, to building scale models of the SS Nimitz, and practically anything you can think of in between. He has created murals and exhibits for national parks, painted billboards, and even hand-drawn the 30 ft. tall letters of the Trump Casino in NJ.  He works with wood, plastics, resins, glass, fiberglass, neon, metals, plumbing, electricity and heavy machinery. He is trained in conservation and archival techniques and standards.

These days, Mike can be found at The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, working as their Exhibits Preparator. On any given day he may be building: a cradle for a rare book; a crate to ship a polar bear; or an entire gallery space within the changing exhibits space. Then again, you might find him designing a Trilobite raceway for Bug Fest, unloading an 18-wheeler of artifacts, and occasionally regaling his talented colleagues with funny stories.
Mike lives in Mt. Airy, Pennsylvania.
